UTM parameters are beneficial for your marketing/sales efforts because they allow you to monitor your conversions, track an ad campaign's effectiveness, and see the sources getting people to book meetings with your team.
This article will show you how to pass these UTM parameters through Chat to Chili Piper and Salesforce.

Mapping the UTM-related Data Fields
Before proceeding with these configuration steps, we recommend checking this article if you are unfamiliar with Data Fields, as we will use them to configure and track the required UTMs.
- Navigate to the Admin Center's Data Fields section here or in the left-hand menu:
- By default, you will find the five UTM-related fields below to be used:
Original UTM Term
Original UTM Campaign
Original UTM Source
Original UTM Medium
Original UTM Content
- Click "Open" next to the UTM-related field you want to map. Each field has a unique configuration, so the mapping needs to be done individually.
- Click "Add Mapping", then select the Object and Fields you want to map it with. You can map to more than one field if you would like to.
- If you mapped multiple fields, you can drag them around to tell which Chili Piper should resolve dynamic tags and skip guest forms for prospects.
- Toggle the Overwrite button if you want the field values to be updated with the most recent submission.
This setting behaves the following way:
Overwrite Setting Value in Salesforce Field Result Enabled Null The field is updated with new value Enabled Not Null The field is updated with new value Disabled Null The field is updated with new value Disabled Not Null The field preserves the existing value - Publish your changes!
Once the required UTMs are mapped, if there are UTMs in your landing page's URL and Chat is initiated, Chili Piper will automatically parse the UTM values from the URL and populate the default UTM fields with these values. If the fields are mapped, these values will also sync with the associated Salesforce record.
For example, you would see your URL similar to this example:
https:///www.chilipiper.com/request-demo?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Search_Brand_2024
Also, we would write "Google" for the UTM Source and "Search_Brand_2024" for the UTM Campaign fields you mapped in your Data Fields.
How do I see these values for a Prospect in Chili Piper?
You can check them in your Chat's Inbox with just a few clicks. Here's how:
- Access your Chat Inbox and click the conversation associated with the prospect you seek.
- On the right-hand, the Info menu will be displayed. The information should be under "Person Data". You may need to scroll down and click "Show all fields" if they are not initially displayed in the first view.
- Here's one example of what it should look like. The fields are not updatable.
If you are a Sales Rep and you do not see the values for the UTM-related fields, it means your Admin may have hidden them for end-users.
